Imagine opening a cluttered Google Doc where everything looks scrambled and overwhelming. For someone with a visual processing disorder, that’s what their brain feels like almost every time it tries to interpret what the eyes are seeing. The eyes themselves may be fine—it’s the brain that struggles, constantly asking, “What exactly am I looking at?” The information is there, but it doesn’t always get processed the way it should.
Because of this, even simple tasks can feel exhausting. Reading a book, copying notes, finding your phone buried in a messy room, or even gauging the distance to a doorway (ouch!) can turn into daily challenges. To make things harder, most people don’t even realize this condition exists. Instead, individuals with visual processing disorder are often unfairly labeled as clumsy, inattentive, lazy, or “not trying hard enough.” In truth, they’re expending huge amounts of mental energy just to get through what others see as routine.
