When The Whitaker Group (TWG) teamed up with New Balance once again to expand its “Willful Bias” narrative through the 990v4 and 998 models, the collaboration became more than just sneakers hitting shelves. It unfolded as a rich cultural story told through fashion. The latest chapter, named “Willful Bias For Education,” reimagines two Made in USA classics in a bold jade-green suede finish. But the shoes are just one part of the project. At its core, the collection delivers a message that blends identity, community, and style—brought to life with a cinematic short film, a thoughtful release rollout, and initiatives rooted in community impact.
Central to the campaign is TWG’s ongoing Unwritten Curriculum series, which dives into the lessons learned outside traditional classrooms. This installment plays out on a fictional college campus during finals week, following a student whose natural charm carries him forward until he meets someone unimpressed by appearances. The story then shifts to a symbolic moment: children in preschool-sized 990v4s mirror acts of confidence, showing how authenticity is nurtured from a young age.
