When we think of staying healthy, what usually comes to mind is eating well, exercising regularly, and visiting the doctor when needed. But there’s a bigger picture that often goes unnoticed. A person’s health is deeply influenced not just by their lifestyle or medical treatment, but by the world around them. These underlying influences are what we call the social determinants of health.
Social determinants are the everyday conditions that shape our lives—from the neighborhoods we grow up in to the jobs we hold and the education we receive. Things like income, job security, education, access to healthcare, and safe housing all help form the foundation of our physical and mental health.
Where and how we live makes a real difference. Countless studies show that the environment we’re surrounded by can strongly affect our health. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that these social factors account for between 30% and 55% of all health outcomes—a powerful reminder that health goes far beyond medical care.
Health professionals—whether general practitioners or those with advanced public health training—recognize that tackling these factors is essential for building a healthier, fairer society. That’s why we’ve put together this guide: to help you better understand what social determinants of health (SDOH) are, why they matter, and how you can be part of the solution—either in your personal life or within your community.
