We’re fanning the flames of the charcoal fire one morning in preparation for the delicious jollof rice, and the next we’re running through the beauty aisle hunting for charcoal to suit one of our beauty needs. Isn’t it amazing? The irony of how dear ol’ messy charcoal (which our mothers chastised us for cleaning up and dirtying our clothing) has become a crucial part of our beauty routine is astounding. But, hey, it works, so you may as well consider joining this healthy bandwagon.
Activated charcoal is created from coal (obviously), but it has been treated to high temperatures, activating chemicals, and occasionally gas to increase its surface area. Simply speaking, activated charcoal is regular charcoal that has been modified to be used therapeutically. Otherwise, consider it to be charcoal on steroids. It was originally used to treat overdoses and acute poisoning, but it has now been shown to be beneficial to the skin, hair, and teeth.
